We have tried several non-HP printers with zero success. As others have said, you need either an HP printer, or something that looks like one - via a Jetdirect box will do it. We have MPE sites in Australia, Houston and Pella(IA), China and Malyasia, all but one connected via VPNs, and either end of any VPN can print on any device visible at the other site that is configured locally, BUT they are ALL HP printers. The worst that happens is if a connection goes down long enough for the 3000 system to loose connection to the printer, the prints will hang until the spooler is restarted.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Mpe: HP printing to remote Internet Printer

We are located in the southern teir of New York State and run MACS on an HP 939-20. Our corporate offices are in Columbus Ohio and the need has arisen to print reports directly from the HP to a printer in Columbus. The chosen printer is a Lexmark and is set up as an Internet Printer. I have the IP address and can successfully ping the printer. It has been configured in npconfig much the same as all of our local network printers:

224 (network_address = xxx.xx.xx.xx # PRTOHIO

      setup_file = PCLLPSGA.HPENV.SYS

      message_interval = 60)

and it is configured on the system:

%showdev prtohio

 LDEV AVAIL OWNERSHIP VOLID DEN ASSOCIATION

  224     SPOOLED       SPOOLER OUT

%

When I try to print to the remote printer I get a "Device not responding" message. What is the best configuration and means of getting this to work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
