I found the list price for the new low end servers, so I configured what I
think is a basic minimal rp2430 system running HP-UX:
1 A6889A HP server rp2430 Solution $1,095.00
There's a single standard 128MB module.
1 A6741A 18GB HotPlug Ultra160 SCSI Disk, A-class $925.00
1 A6741A 0D1 Factory integrated
1 B3920EA HP-UX OE Media for Servers
1 B3920EA UM9 HP-UX version 11i
1 B3920EA AAF CD-ROM (disk only) $520.00
1 B3920EA 0D1 Factory integrated $195.00
1 B9088AC HP-UX OE LTU 1 CPU with system
1 A5810A A-Class Server field rack kit $75.00
1 H4396A No Additional Support
Total is $2,810. Note that there is NO CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, nor is there
a tape drive. There's also no console, you'll probably have to use the
10Base-T Telnet management port.
So, I don't really see a $1000 server here, I see at least $2,810, plus it
probably needs some third party memory. Oh, it needs support also, unless
you like to handle that yourself or through a third party. Oh, there is
probably some standard 1 year next day hardware support.
To add 3 years of next day hardware and software updates, add this:
1 H4401Y 6M1 Support - Internet OE per processor $554.00
Then, add at least 1GB of Kingston memory for $259 or the HP A5841A kit
for $2,645!
You'll need a CD-ROM drive (like a nice external Plextor Ultra SCSI
model), we move ours between systems in the rare event that we actually
need it to load software.
So, now you need some sort of tape drive for backup, unless you back it up
to a central server... so maybe another $750 there.
So, we're far from a $1,000 server here. The single HP 18GB disc drive is
nearly as expensive as the base server.
