Let me state first and foremost that I have a stake in this discussion
due to the fact that I sell software and services to the HP3000/MANMAN
community. Although I realize this is not a listserver for marketing, I
felt that I had to say something in support of the HP3000 and not
migrating away. So, if you don't mind a point of view from a
vendor......

I have to agree with the folks who have stated the HP3000 will outlast
other platforms and or be around for many years to come. I have worked
in the refurb side of HP hardware and there are plenty of parts out
there. I was still doing bids for HP1000's as late as January of this
year. There was never a problem locating parts. There are now and will
be plenty of 3rd party support providers ready to pick up HP's 3000
slack, if for no other reason than it is a good market. Is the most
common hardware issue disk drives? Isn't the HP3000 one of the most
reliable servers ever built? Just because HP is ending support does not
mean the 3000 suddenly becomes an unstable platform in performance and
reliability. Originally HP's announcement caused a ripple throughout
the HP3000 community. But if you do some investigation and stay on this
listserver, you will find that you are not in as much of a bind as you
might think. Would you prefer 3rd party 3000 support or having a new
fully supported hardware platform that is less reliable overall?

There are a lot of HP3000 users who do not wish to migrate. The
pressure has been put on the community by HP, not by a need to replace
the 3000. I haven't heard of too many sites happy with their migration
experiences when leaving the HP3000 and specifically MANMAN. I would
ask, other than HP announcing "end of support in 2006", what is your
reason for leaving your MPE based applications? Is there another
application that will run your business better, is easier to maintain
and use, and is BULLETPROOF for the next 10-20 years? I am not implying
that the 3000 has 20 years left, I am implying that just because you
migrate to IBM or anything else, doesn't guarantee that you won't be in
the same boat as you are now in 5 years with your new system and
hardware. Why not look at options for improving or stabilizing your
current environment?

Since this thread was started by someone trying to see who was going to
leave the 3000, I will ask; who is staying?

For MANMAN users; we offer a GUI front end for MANMAN. More importantly
we are converting all of the data to SQL in real time. Our software
resides on PC's and accesses the HP3000 for the IMAGE data. There are
many other benefits to using Xactman. If anyone is interested in making
their MANMAN/HP3000 environment more user friendly and keeping an
application that they know and rely on into the future, feel free to
email or call me for more info.

We also offer an IMAGE to SQL conversion tool for any HP3000 user,
regardless of the application you are running.

Our website is www.quantumleapit.com.

Hope you don't mind my two cents.
Thanks,
Donnie

You missed my point. HP hasn't ended MPE support as you stated in your
original post. Most likely you meant to say something like "announced
end of
sales and end of support dates" - to be accurate. I used to say I
wouldn't own
an IBM if somebody gave me one. However, if you wish to forward an
evaluation
system for me to review....
