We use an HP3000 with DDS-2 tapes. We regularly write 60m, 90m and 120m
Dats, using compression on some Dats (In house backups) and no
compression on others (when we send new versions of our software to
customers). The Dats have to be MRS (having the 4 ||||) printed on them
but we can still read the original DDS1 Dats. We use the HP program
DEVCTRL to turn compression on and off.

I've heard about those MRS tapes and have tried them without success in
our
tape drive. It will *not* write to any tape of less than 90M length,
regardless
of MRS, ||||, or anything else.
