Be assured that I *did* consider this option :-) but it does not give
me the nice feature to operate in "detached mode" i.e. work with local
folders while not connected to the server.

This is because POP clients like Eudora or Pegasus seem to store all
messages/folders in one directory... unless I'm missing a nice config
item that allows to have some folders on drive C: and some on X: where
X: could be a Samba share then...
