A very interesting article. Of course, ComputerWorld wouldn't be itself if it
did not have glaring factual mistakes, but what the heck. (What is "HP
Interex?" and to which conference do they refer when they say "And HP Interex
colocated (sic) its conference with HP World, an Internet application service
conference, ERP World and a Linux summit." ?

However, it underlines what I have always believed about HP World, if we have a
good program, the users will appreciate it and will come. It is critically
important that Interex remain focused on the users. The other components will
come. Unlike Comdex where the vendors are dropping out at an alarming rate, HP
World retains its vendors year after year and adds new ones. But the success
of the conference is measured in attendee registration, participation and
return year after year.

As a long time HP World (née HP3000 IUG International conference and later
known as Interex), it states what I have always known about the values of users
conferences.

As a vendor it tells me this is the conference to display my wares.

As a frequent speaker, it tells me this is a group of people that thrives on
learning.

As the Conference Committee chairman for 4 of the last 5 conferences, it tells
me we did it correctly and it should continue in this manner.

As a candidate for the board of directors of Interex, it reaffirms my
confidence in the belief that focusing on the users is the way to go for
Interex. Concern for the users must never take a back seat to anything at
Interex and HP World. Growing the conference by appealing to others groups is
nice, but the current users come first.

(Denys in San Diego at the StorageTek Forum 1999, amidst UNIX, NT and MVS, in
the only booth proudly displaying the words "MPE SPOKEN HERE".)

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
