Anyone interested in POSIX, please read on; everyone else, press <DELETE>
now...

At a BOFUNIX meeting at IPROF, we discovered the need for a SIG devoted to
POSIX. Stan Sieler suggested the name "SIGPOS/iX" (get it?) and I liked it
so much it stuck.

There are just a couple of minor issues left in the formation of SIGPOS/iX,
but they do need some discussion. Since I'm going to be on vacation all of
next week, it would be a good time to wrap it all up (hey, you didn't think
I'd go offline, did you? What kind of a vacation would that be?).

First, if anyone objects to this discussion happening on HP3000-L, tell me
*today* and I'll set up a temporary list server.

Second, please keep the subject "SIGPOS/iX" so those not interested can
easily filter this out.

Please participate! I've got an initial membership list from IPROF, but
frankly, with some of the handwriting I'm looking at, some of you should have
been doctors, not programmers.

Interex has bent over backwards (ouch!) to help me get this together quickly,
so I'd like to get back to them right away with the answers to the following
issues.

Here are the issues:

a) Our charter needs to be review/polished/fixed/etc. Here it is:

SIGPOS/iX exists to promote the use of POSIX on MPE systems, to act as a
forum for the advocacy of enhancements to the implementation of POSIX on MPE,
and to educate MPE users on the benefits of POSIX. Our initial areas of
interest include:

   1) Porting applications and utilities from Unix to MPE
   2) Porting applications and utilities from MPE to Unix
   3) Interoperability between MPE and other operating systems
   4) Teaching POSIX (Unix) concepts to MPE users
   5) Using POSIX to move Unix users to MPE
   6) POSIX "smoothing"; improving the POSIX implementation on MPE

SIGPOS/iX also collects and packages the products on the "FREEWARE" tape,
which is currently being distributed by Interex and acts as a pilot for a
possible future MPE FOS FREEWARE account.

b) Officers

We need to find/elect/draft at least 2 (three is better) member for an
Executive Committee; I've volunteered to be one of the Co-Chairmen. It would
be nice if there were enough volunteers to force us to have an election,
but...

Thanks!
