Posix newbie, don't want to screw this up...

I've recently downloaded ZIP & UNZIP (Thanks, Neil Harvey Associates, et
al!), untarred them, and they appear to work, as long as I'm MANAGER.SYS.
Now I need to learn about Posix permissions, or at least enough to make ZIP
executable by MGR.PAYROLL...

shell/iX> cd /
shell/iX> ls -nd usr
dr-xr-xr-x  12 1        0           1280 Jan 13 14:31 usr
shell/iX> cd usr
shell/iX> ls -nd local
drwxr-xr-x   6 1        0            704 Jun 22 17:50 local
shell/iX> cd local
shell/iX> ls -nd bin
drwxr-xr-x   2 1        0           1280 Jun 22 17:54 bin
shell/iX> cd bin
shell/iX> ls -n zip
-rwxrwx---   1 1        0         271360 Sep 13  1997 zip
shell/iX>

I get the impression that the rwxrwxrwx group applies to
Individual,Group,Other respectively, but what does that mean?  What should I
read to learn how this all works?
