New HP 3000 Web Technologies, High-performance
Servers and Platform Enhancements Deliver E-services
Capabilities to Customers

Palo Alto, California. May 3, 1999

Hewlett-Packard Company today announced support for key Web-enabling
technologies -- such as Apache Web server, HP
Driver for Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), and Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol (LDAP) -- across the HP 3000
platform, enabling customers to quickly and easily establish an Internet
presence.

HP also announced the new HP 3000 989KS/x50 midrange server, which is the
highest-performing HP 3000 system available.
It delivers a 25 percent performance increase over existing 989KS/x00 servers
and a 15 percent increase over existing
997/800 servers. Additionally, expanded storage and manageability deliver higher
 capacity and better overall performance.

These easy-to-implement and cost-effective solutions are ideal for new HP 3000
customers in targeted industries such as
on-line retail, healthcare and credit-union markets, as well as existing
customers who are developing Internet-based businesses.

The HP 3000 is an excellent foundation for e-services, such as the HP Open Skies
 airline-reservation system, which enable
airlines to take advantage of the latest e-ticketing, e-commerce and Internet
booking technologies.

"The value of the HP 3000 platform continues to prove itself in the new era of
e-services," said Harry Sterling, general manager
of HP' s Commercial Systems Division. "Customers are expanding their rapidly
growing Internet businesses and deploying
enhanced services based on the HP 3000's proven reliability, robustness and
interoperability."

Web-enabling Technologies

The following new Web technologies facilitate the HP 3000's interoperability and
 reliability in networked, heterogeneous
enterprise environments.

Apache, a widely used, open-source Web server, is newly enabled for MPE/iX,
giving HP 3000 customers an easy,
powerful and affordable way to establish an Internet or intranet presence.

The HP 3000 now delivers industry-standard database connectivity with the
new HP Driver for JDBC. JDBC facilitates
development of Java applications and applets, and the HP Driver for JDBC
allows Java applications to access data
stored in IMAGE/SQL and ALLBASE/SQL on the HP 3000. This capability also is
 available for ALLBASE/SQL on
     the HP 9000 Enterprise Server.

LDAP SDK now also is available on the HP 3000. LDAP facilitates
interoperability by allowing access to X.500 and
X.509 directories stored on other platforms.

New High-performance Midrange Server

The HP 3000 989KS/x50, based on the PA-8200 RISC processor at 240MHz, is the new
top-end of the 9x9KS family. Key
benefits include the following:

     highest performance available in the HP 3000 family;

reliability for business-critical Web applications; and

low-cost growth path designed to protect customers' existing investments.

Enhanced Storage for Higher Capacity

Robust new AutoRAID on the HP 3000 combines worry-free storage management with
best-in-class performance and
capacity. Model 12H packs up to 1.3 terabytes into a 2-meter rack, reducing
storage-management costs.

HP OpenView IT/Operations for Easier Manageability

Enhancements to HP OpenView IT/Operations (ITO), HP's systems- and
network-management solution, enable easier
management of HP 3000 servers in a dedicated or heterogeneous environment. An
improved default set of scripts assist in
volume management (including disk arrays and mirrored disks), database
management, network interfaces and services, printer
management, system backups, and security.

HP Secure Web Console

HP secure Web console greatly reduces operating expenses by enabling users to
remotely manage their servers on-site, from
home, or from virtually any location worldwide. The secure Web console, which is
approximately the size of a VCR tape
cartridge, allows up to four operators in different locations to access the
console simultaneously.
