Ted's post brings up an important issue which should be emphasized,
here, regardless if this is the issue at hand in this thread ...
namely, that before any OS upgrade, all software vendors whose products
run on the target system should be notified, and they should either
certify that the current rev of the product(s) will run on the new OS
release or an update should be shipped and installed either prior to or
concurrently with the OS update.  This may save hours or days of
frustration, needlessly high blood pressure, and, perhaps, a needless
backout of the MPE update!

It occurs to me that we upgraded NBS in preparation for the 5.5 upgrade.
Perchance that is your problem.  When I run NBS, it claims to be

NetBase Spooling Utility  [0.9.6]  Update 8a
