Plus ca change...before the advent of the big swing bands, Duke Ellington's
drummer, Sonny Greer, had an enormous kit, woodblocks, tubular bells,
xylophone etc.
There's a lot to be said for the swing band ideal of the fairly
inconspicuous
drummer "just" pushing the band along. Jo Jones for Basie, Chick Webb,
Charlie Watts on a good day...
