There was indeed.  Developed by Lance Carnes and it was
available in 1983.  He developed it to improve the performance of
his port of TeX  (by Don Knuth) to the HP3000.  Fine product.  I
doubt that it's still available, Lance has been working with TeX on
PCs for a good number of years.
