Later this afternoon, while rooting around looking for something else, I
stumbled over a web page at the University of California's (Berkeley) Museum of
Paleontology website. It contains the text of a 1999 address to the
Paleontological Society presented by David Deamer, someone who's well respected for his
work on the origins of life. He lays out our best understandings of the
evolution of the elements, galaxies, stars, planets and life in greater detail than I
did, although he says much the same thing as I wrote earlier. If you're
interested in where the clay came from, you may find it worth the time to read. It's
