Growthpower is not Cobol based. It's written in BASIC/3000, with some Fortran and SPL in the SL.

Subject: Ldev 7 should be Tape but is assigned to network session

Hello List,

CFA's HP3000/A400 running 7.5 pp2, having problems with tape backup. Looks like the LDEV 7 which is defined as tape, has somehow been assigned to a session. They are reporting problems with losing the network connection, had to reset the NSCONTROL a few times. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Connie Sellitto

Hi Connie,

I'd say your tape drive has gone south.

If it has a problem, typically on a reboot and doesn't get recognized, it will make that LDEV free for virtual sessions.

If it's in a smart enclosure (slides out), you may want to try shutting down and reseating the drive and rebooting.

If it's an internal drive, I'd call your support folks and have them come out and replace it which will require a shutdown/power down/reboot.

I bet you a nickel that when booting you had a LLIO error and the drive was not found. (It could be a cabling or SCSI terminator issue.) Therefore the LDev number became available for sessions. A reboot will be needed.

Have any backups worked on LDev 7 since you moved the system?

The only time I've seen this happen is when there are boot-up errors with the tape drive, and the device/path is unrecognized. The ldev[s] associated with the path are then removed from the startup configuration and become available for the "non-nailed device pool" that is used by VTserver and Telnet.

If you "showdev tape" does it list ldev 7? (When the above condition occurs, it won't show up in the expected classes either)

It's going to take much more than a broken drive to get into this problem.

You can boot a system with a tape drive configured but not attached a the ldev will still be associated with the drive. The problem here may be deeper, as Jeff indicates. Something removed it from the configuration table at start up time, and that takes a bad configuration from sysgen or a broken adapter or some such.

After you do the things Jeff suggested, you should go into sysgen and check the configuration for that ldev. Then you will need to reboot and on the way up, you should check the hardware status with mapper(2).

Connie,

When the system was booted, or at boot time, the system could not identify the tape drive. Hence LDEV 7 became available to sessions.

The fix would be to reboot the system and monitor to make sure it identifies the tape drive.

While it could be possible to get the tape drive with out a reboot. It will be difficult.

Agree...a DOWN of 7 and check the cables/power cycle the drive/UP 7 and mount a tape to see if the "Unlabeled tape mounted on LDEV 7" appears on the console....sometimes it works. Most often, though, not.

Your tape drive is probably fine.

I've seen this happen frequently.

Always under the following conditions:

While booting the system, a tape is loaded into the drive.

This combination of events, depending upon the timing, could easily result in an LLIO error caused by the i/o system not recognizing the tape drive while it is active during the "i/o scan" occurring at bootup.

After experiencing it several times, I try to infoem my clients to NEVER load a tape while booting the system.

I also recommend NOT booting the system during a thunderstorm - but that's another story.

I should have added:

To get the system to again recongnize ldev 7, you will need to perform another START NORECOVERY, ensuring, of course, no loading (or

unloading) activity on the tape drive.

Subject: HP3K MRP/ERP Apps (COBOL)

 Dear Listers:

A brief query, I can only Google three (3) HP3K MRP/ERP systems (ex. ManMan of course) on Google- IBS3000, Visibility, AMAPS+PLUS. Looking for any source(s) of information, esp any COBOL based.

Thanks and appreciate your continued courtesy.

There's also a HP3K version of MCBA that's COBOL-based. It's an ERP/financial package.
