All the previous answers are accurate.  But the simplest
answer is the handshaking.

P.S.  Hardware handshaking isn't going to work if you're
using those a 3 pin RS-232 signal!  It's gotta be a
fully functional modem port on your DTC or a serial
port on your JetDirect box.
