It has been many years, but back in the days of the LaserJet Plus and
LaserJet II, the manuals had information on how downloadable fonts were
created. The escape sequences, headings for the font, for each character,
etc. were defined, giving the significance of each byte. There were bytes
for the cell width, height, base position, orientation, height, spacing,
horizontal motion index, offsets, style, typeface, etc., as well as the bit
map containing the character cell data. I've looked around and I don't have
the manuals anymore, but perhaps someone else does. If you can find the
documentation, you should be able to write a program that will allow you to
create your own fonts and download them to your printer. I used this method
to create a font for printing four portrait pages on one 8.5x11 page. To
give you some idea how long ago that was, the program which edited the fonts
was written for use on the HP 150! It used the HP 150's built in BASIC and
graphics features. I may have the program on a 710K floppy someplace - I
don't know.

At one time there were off-the-shelf programs which ran on IBM PCs (DOS) for
creating LaserJet downloadable fonts, but I'm not sure where you would look
for them now. There are some LaserJet experts on this list. Perhaps one of
them has a way of building a custom font or even scanning in a font sample
and creating a LaserJet downloadable font from it.

Good Luck!

John
