Thanks for your help. This will save many people heartache.
While I definitely follow the logic I am having a few problems
with the practicalities. The specific questions I have are:
1. How do you output to a file? The output command seems to only
have LP or TERM as options.
2. How do you input from the file? I guess you can use
redirection but since I have not figured out the how to output I
have not tried the input.

If you want query to write to something other than the printer, you have
to give a file equate to "QSLIST". For example, to go to disc say,
:FILE QSLIST;DEV=DISC;SAVE;NOCCTL;REC=-132,10,F,ASCII;DISC=1000
Then use the LP command and do your report. The output will go into the
file qslist, or your file equate can give a different name. After you create
this file, you can then change it with an editor, or if ready to go, you can
use the XEQ command of query to read this file and execute the query
commands you've written to it.
