I called HPRC yesterday on a DTC issue. The problem is that the new
Gigabyte routers don't support bridging. A firewall may present a similar
problem. IP routing is only supported on the 16RX DTC, not the 16MX. So
the HP-3000 should be able to communicate with the 16RX, but the download
will have to come from an HP-9000 running HPUX. I asked about managing the
DTC via the PC based DTC manager and received an affirmative. In any case,
we have an HP-9000 and will use it to manager the DTC.

If a firewall is involved, there are a couple ways to get the DTC IP traffic
through. The first and easiest is to tunnel, i.e., open all traffic between
the HP-3000 IP address and the DTC IP address. Tunneling, by the way, is
the only way we have been able to use NS Services, i.e., DSLINE, REMOTE
between HP-3000s across firewalls. The proprietary FTP between HP-3000s
also requires firewall tunneling (although it should not) because the FTP
does not follow the RFC.

For specific firewall configurations, permissions, etc. you will need some
technical documentation from HP on how the DTC communicates with the HP-3000
& HP-9000. A skilled network engineer may be able to figure it out with a
sniffer & other tools.

Unfortunately the request for download is sent out as a
broadcast and the
download is sent to the DTC's hardware address. One
potential solution is
to setup and additional Openview workstation on the same
segment as the DTC
to respond to the download requests. The question is that
after you get the
DTC downloaded, will the DTC be able to talk to the system
through the
                firewall.

                Hope this helps,
                Steve
