I'm guessing you don't have to recreate the device file since it isn't
recording much of anything beyond the ldev number:

:listfile /dev/tape,unique
 ********************
 FILE: /dev/tape


 DEV TYPE  : DEVICE LINK
 LDEV      : 7                   IO CLASS  : TAPE
