Hi HP3000-L,

I finally wrote an initial test version of the DNS configuration checker
script that people can run before they attempt to install sendmail which
will hopefully reduce the amount of DNS-related sendmail questions I end up
getting. ;-)

You can download the script from:

        http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/dnscheck.tar.Z

Untar it onto your e3000, and /tmp/dnscheck will be created. Log on as any
non-prived user and then run the script. It will examine a bunch of stuff
and if any problems are found, it will tell you what you need to fix and
then instruct you to rerun the script after you have made the corrections.
If everything in a long list of things is OK, you will get a
"Congratulations" message at the end.

The script looks at:

/bin/uname -n
/SYS/NET/HOSTS
/etc/hosts
/SYS/NET/RESLVCNF
/etc/resolv.conf
DNS "A" records
DNS "PTR" records

The script is strictly read-only and does not modify any files on your
machine. It requires MPE 6.0 or greater, and makes use of the
/BIND/PUB/bin/dig utility that's included in FOS starting with 6.0.

If the script detects problems which you are unable to fix or don't
understand, please e-mail me a full cut/paste of the script output. Please
DO NOT sanitize the hostnames or IP addresses in the output, because I will
need to see the real data in order to explain or troubleshoot properly.
Your network data will be kept confidential until I delete your message.

Thanks!

- Mark B.

PS: This is only Phase I of this script. I may enhance it further to do
additional /SYS/NET/HOSTS checking, along with checking localhost and
secondary interfaces in a multiple-interface machine.
