Our nightly backup process comprises three stages:

1. Backup our production account, data and source code, to the
HAL_BKUP volume set in Store-to-Disc format.

2. Copy the most recent S-T-D backup files from HAL_BKUP to a local
*Nix host via anonymous ftp. This host sits on a physically secure
network segment within the data centre (a glorified name for my
office) and has no access from outside networks.

3. Back up the same files to tape. This tape is then moved out of the
data centre and placed in a fireproof vault.

The weekly backup is the same as the daily saving only that the
complete system, excluding HAL_BKUP, is stored.

The monthly backup is performed on the first business day of each
month and comprises creating two CSLT tapes together with a full
system store. One copy is kept in a fireproof value inside the data
centre, the other is kept in a fireproof vault elsewhere. At least
one copy is retained for a minimum of three months.

Backup and CSLT tapes are intermittently tested by restoring to a
second, identically configured, HP3000-918LX located on our premises.

This means that we usually have three copies of the current backup
together with one copy of each of the preceding nine business days
plus the past three weekend backups.
