You are correct. That was most certainly not part of the primary
design centre.

The similar system that was designed with office use in mind was the
J6000 workstation, which IIRC had variable speed fans and ways to tell
it when the system was in a desckside setup and when it was in a
rack. However, I doubt that MPE/iX would be willing to boot on that
system.
