There are commercial solutions [Streamx from VESOFT is often the prime
example -- I'm sure most, if not all, of the other scheduling/job management
programs have their methodologies as well]

There are also "home grown" [and, hence, "free"] solutions: use of the CIOR
functions (<, >, and >>) to pass data via files.  By using message files,
the "job" can semi-interactively prompt for the data as needed...
