Agreed!

Well, to put your mind at ease, I'm running Linux from this address, and I've
turned off my machine "at work" [which is, admittely, a windows system
w/outlook] -- so I'm reasonably certain I'm not "contributing" to the madness
at the moment :)

Well, I'm considering creating my own local mail server, set up with
appropriate tools for catching, categorizing, and ultimately nuking
spam-n-worms. At least I'll have "peace of mind" that my personal inbox here
at home will be, well, tame... ;)

At our last linux user group meeting, we had a presentation from a fellow that
does exactly that, but at a "corporate" level. Essentially the tools he is
using are postfix [as the mailer -- think "sendmail"] and spamassassin.
Postfix has a series of rules that can be set to simply disallow "known
patterns of spam/worms", and spamassassin simply cleans up the rest -- THEN
it goes to an internal [windows based] virus scanner and the internal mail
server for the users in the organization. The postfix/spamassassin combo is
eliminating a significant portion of the messages so that neither the mail
server nor viral scanner "chokes up and dies" anymore.
