PALO ALTO, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard Co. brought in an outside executive to head its personal computers group as part of a move to re-establish the unit as a standalone division within the company.
In January, the computing division was folded into HP's far more lucrative printing group as part of a shakeup by then-CEO Carly Fiorina, who was ousted shortly afterwards for failing to boost profit quickly enough. Mark Hurd, formerly of NCR Corp., replaced Ms. Fiorina three months ago.
The new head of the systems group, named Monday, is R. Todd Bradley, 46, who resigned in January as president and chief executive officer of handheld computer maker palmOne Inc.
Mr. Bradley, who received $1.5-million in bonus and salary last year and a severance package of at least $2.4-million this year, had led palmOne since it was formed in October 2003 in a spinoff from Palm Inc.
Before palmOne, Mr. Bradley spent three years at Gateway Inc., rising to executive vice president of global operations. He also held executive positions at GE Capital Corp., The Dun & Bradstreet Corp. and FedEx Corp.
Vyomesh Joshi, who had headed HP's combined computing-printing unit, will return to overseeing the printing department exclusively.
