CI fast, sh slow...

If I connect to INVENT3K using hpterm in linux, everything is fine when
using the CI - it responds as if I'm sitting next to the machine. But when I
enter the posix shell and type something it comes back on the screen as
though I'm using a teletype machine - it takes about a quarter of a second
per character.

Is there some way I can speed this up? (Is there some weird handshaking
going on?)
