You can communicate using PORT2 on your 700/92, however . . . .

You cannot do so at the same time you wish to use PORT1 to the host. This
is because your terminal config swaps both ports functionality between each
other. That is when one port is communicating with a host, the other MUST
BE treated as a printer.

Normally I use both ports on my 700/92 terminals to two separate hosts as a
cheap way to avoid buying a serial A/B switch.

There is a way to do what you want, however I would treat this as a 'kluge'
and not a solution:

1) First log in via your normal PORT1 to the host.

2) Invoke whatever software you use to receive data.

3) Change the toggle in terminal config to PORT2/PORT1

4) Set up your printer port to do a LOG BOTTOM.

5) Put an asterisk (*) in AUTO LF of your modes (only if your bar code or
bar-code reader does not pad an extra line feed/carriage return in your
data) just so it will be displayed properly.

6) Start reading your bar codes to see if it works.

7) Your host application should receive the data that the terminal "thinks"
is printer output.

The above presupposes that you are entering data in character mode AND your
software has been set up to receive bar codes as input one-line-at-a-time.
In other words, you are not using some fancy block mode data entry screen
where the HP "Enter" key is required. If so you may have to play with it a
little more.

Also of course you'll have to reverse the PORT2/PORT1 in terminal config and
turn AUTO LF off, when you need to do something else, (i.e., log off.).

I am trying to use my printer port on my terminal to comminicate with an R/F
Terminal Bar Code reader. This reader is intended to scan the bar coded
serial
numbers on the circuit boards in the equipment we make.

Does anyone know if the printer port on a 700/92 terminal can receive data,
or
can it just send?

I have tried hooking two terminals together and get no response from the
receiving one when I try to send to it.

Thanks for any help
