Folks:

All of this recent talk of DDS-3 "war stories" is giving me even more grey
hair than I already have (some HP-3000 persons have been in it long enough to
be grey!). We purchased two HP DDS-3 drives (one for each of our machines)
late last year for the express purpose of unattended backup. We rely on
VSTORE as our backup verification mechanism. With the recent talk of DDS-3s
having tracking misalignments, I'm beginning to wonder if that's enough
verification.

I've been curious for years as to the function that VSTORE does. I know that
I can take a DDS-3 tape from one machine to the other and VSTORE reports that
all files were verified. Obviously, VSTORE isn't comparing files on tape to
those on disk since only a few files are present on the second machine. What
exactly is VSTORE doing? Is it reading the file label from tape and then
checksumming the tape file? Then comes the $64M question: how much trust can
I put into VSTORE??

Thanks a bunch!!
