Gordon,

You need a full-height card. I can get you one, are you interested?
Just bear in mind this is a short term solution.

This is how it looks on our 967RX, on your 969 only the path will be
different:

PATH: 8 LDEV:
  ID: HPA1741A TYPE: CA
PMGR: SPECTRUM_CIO_CAM PMGRPRI: 6
LMGR: MAXIOS: 0

PATH: 8.0 LDEV:
  ID: HP27113A TYPE: DA
PMGR: HPIB_DAM PMGRPRI: 6
LMGR: MAXIOS: 0

PATH: 8.0.0 LDEV: 8
  ID: HP7980A TYPE: TAPE
PMGR: TAPE_7978_DM PMGRPRI: 10
LMGR: LOGICAL_DEVICE_MANAGER MAXIOS: 0

Nope, I've just been going through this. If it were a 7980, there is a
SCSI
interface for that. I'm trying now to get an old half height HP-IB card to
work in my 969, but with no luck.
