My experience has been that vi is happiest on MPE when editing bytestream files.
Whenever vi complains to me about being out of space, it has always been when I
was trying to edit an MPE fixed-ASCII file. I suspect this is likely related
to how the bytestream emulator deals with trailing spaces in ASCII record files.
