Most likely, no. Sendmail can send outbound mail without any help from
another system (if you have it configured that way).

If they were using the OpenMail system (I assume you're not confusing
HP OpenMail with HP OpenDesk Manager on the 3000) to relay mail for them,
they'll discover that M$Exchange does a poor (but sometimes adequate) job
of relaying mail for other non-M$ systems.

I'd recommend that they ask some of the folks on the SIGEMAIL list (at
Interex) for other helpful notes. OpenMail does make a (from what I
understand) better transport for M$ mail clients than does Exchange in
many cases - it's certainly much more scalable (and HP pays more attention
to standards than M$ does)... so keeping OpenMail as a transport but using
M$ mail clients on the desktops might be a less-intrusive (and more
reliable) alternative for them.

On a related note; I suspect if a survey was done, the percentage of sites
on Internet blacklists (because they can't configure their servers correctly)
that are running M$Exchange to the percentage that are running OpenMail is
probably something like 70% exchange, 1% openmail, with the remainder being
sendmail or other mailers... (just an educated guess mind you. :-) )
