Valeda,

Normally, your font selection should have a pitch selection for fixed
spaced fonts, or a point selection for proportionally spaced fonts, but not
both. You can get a list of font selection escape sequences for your
printer by printing out the PCL font list, which is usually on the
information menu or the test menu.

In addition to the font, I usually include explicit specifications for the
horizontal motion index and either the vertical motion index or the line
spacing.

You can specify the Letter Gothic Bold font spaced at 12 CPI and 8 LPI as
follows (omit the comments I've enclosed in braces):

<esc>Z       {disable display functions}
<esc>E       {reset printer}
<esc>&l0s0O  {simplex printing, portrait orientation}
<esc>(0p12h0s3b4102T
             {fixed spacing, 12 pitch, upright, bold, Letter Gothic}
<esc>&k10H   {10/120 horizontal motion index}
<esc>&l8D    {8 lines per inch}

I'm not sure what's producing the blank page at the beginning of your test
files, but I'd suspect that you're setting pre-space mode and you have a
top-of-form command associated with your first output line.

Subject: Format file for LJet Printer

I'm trying to setup a laserjet printer format file to be used in the ENV
parameter of a FILE command. (first-time experience)

I need to print 7.5-8 lines per inch. Printing either Letter Gothic 10
from a MSWord document (12 cpi and 7.5 lines/inch) or my good old line
printer (10 cpi and 8 lines/inch) is perfect. When I try setting up
the '(s' escape sequence, the closest I can get is 14 cpi and 6 lines/inch
(after many experiments) using the following sequence:

(s0p14h12v0s3b6T

The 'HP PCL 5 Printer Language Technical Reference Manual' insinuates that
I can use Lineprinter typeface, but it looks like I need the 'HP PCL 5
Comparison Guide' to get the font codes. Don't have one and can't seem to
find it at the hp manual site.

Also, I'm getting two sets of my test printouts with a blank page before
eash set.

Can anyone give me some suggestions?? It would be my best holiday present.

I'm starting with the following sequences:

EscZEscEEsc&l0O

TIA
Valeda
