xterm function keys?

We are attempting to execute an HP3K speedware application on a 967
 using an HP715 Workstation running an hpterm window.  When the
application changes the function keys, they disappear.  They also do not
fill in the text of the function keys.  How does one configure the
hpterm to allow this?  The keys work but they dont paint like on a
dumb terminal or Reflections.  Please email because my news server is
unreliable.
