We haven't deployed Win95 in our user community yet, but we've been
evaluating it in the IT department since the final beta version. I just
forked over $$$ on August 24 to get the release version on my personal
system at home. I like it. I use both Mac's and WinTel machines so I'm
not a Windows bigot by any means.
Why? The primary reason is network support, but other important areas
include long file names (finally), better user interface, good support for
SCSI disks, and improved multimedia capability.
The Win3.x/DOS networking was a pain to support compared to the Macs
(we're a mostly Mac shop here). Having protected-mode drivers that don't
chew up a big chunk of conventional memory is great as well as the ease of
running multiple protocol stacks - IPX, NetBEUI, TCP/IP. As is having the
built-in Winsock.
Once we get Win95 out in the field, the network management features like
centralized user policies and DHCP will be very useful.
It's not quite Nervana yet, but it's probably about as close as we'll get
in the Windows world without breaking a lot more of the older software. :)
