Around 10 years ago when I needed to add a 2nd IDE disk to my Pavillion I had to buy
a new "Enhanced IDE" controller. I believe (could be wrong here) that there was (is?) a limit
of 2 IDE drives, A: and C: being those two so if you need a 2nd hard drive the controller has
to support it. This was all ~10 years ago so this may not be true anymore but I thought I would
pass it along in case it helps.

Why couldn't you take the C drive from the E-machine and make it the D drive of the XP
machine and put the scratch drive in the E-machine and update it to XP? You still may need
the enhanced controller but it would be on the home PC that way!

Cheers,

Bill
