(I often idly speculate - if an HP3000 was intelligent, had a
system crash and a warm reboot, would it *know* it had failed, or would
its memories look like an unbroken run of uptime?)

Intelligent by hardware, 1/4 Decade ago, Only HP3000 Mini computer has
Single bit hamming code with error recovery(ERCC) on this mini computer class, Now, even some PC file server have this Intelligent. 

Before system crash, most case Predict support report shows some read error on
DISC drive or Memory?

My friend had computer(not HP) will diagnose own system and If diagnostic failed It order some spare parts and service person automatically...
