e3000 Answers Times Two

Solutions Symposiums Planned for East, West

by Susan B. Shor

With planning time ticking away for e3000 users, Interex has scheduled two
Solutions Symposia, one in Valley Forge, Penn., and one in San Jose, Calif
(www.interex.org/hpe3000). This will ensure that e3000 users do not face
expensive or time consuming travel in order to participate.
The e3000 Symposium East is coming up at the end of the month-March 26-29.
The West will be April 23-26. Each features three tracks designed by the MPE
Forum to focus on a different phase of the process: Migration Planning,
Migration Implementation and HP e3000 System Fundamentals and Homesteading.
Keynote speakers in the East will be Dave Wilde, Marty Poniatowski and Ram
Appalaraju; In the West, Wilde, Don Jenkins and Nick Van Der Zweep. Wilde, HP
e3000 business manager, will have HP e3000 R&D Lab director of engineering
Ross MacDonald and HP e3000 migration center manager Alvina Nishimoto as his
co-speakers for an e3000 update. Poniatowski, HP solutions architect, will
talk on manageability for HP's multi-OS environment and Appalaraju, director
of marketing, HP Worldwide Customer Programs, Business Critical Computing,
will give a talk titled, "HP's Multi-OS and Platform Strategy Update and
Supporting You As Your Business and IT Needs Evolve."
Among the presenters will be representatives from Acucorp, AD Technologies
Inc., Ecometry, Semantic Designs and Speedware, as well as Hewlett-Packard.
The Migration Planning track offers success stories that will offer practical
examples of other companies that have migrated from the e3000. In addition,
there will be sessions that describe migration tools, ways to ease a move to
UNIX, Linux or Windows NT, how to reengineer applications, and opportunities
to learn through others' experiences in technology, business processes and
risk management on the migration path.
The Presenters
"At Ecometry, we have an installed base of over 200 clients who are faced
with migrating their core business application from the e3000. As a result,
people are looking for as much information as possible to help them with
their planning," Les Johnson, director of technical sales operations at
Ecometry, told HP World Magazine. "We are taking every opportunity to explain
the facts of migrating Ecometry from the e3000, and the Solutions Symposium
is an excellent venue to reach many clients at once."
Johnson said the company will discuss deciding whether to migrate to UNIX or
Windows or how to use both within the same enterprise.
Speedware representative Nicolas Fortin will present a tutorial on database
migration. Ken Robertson, HP migrations manager with AD Technologies Inc.,
will discuss the technical details of migrating HP COBOL to AcuCOBOL.
Semantic Designs CEO Ira D. Baxter said he will discuss a highly accurate
automated translation technology, how it works and offer some statistics from
past porting of very large systems using the technology. "This will give the
attendees some basic background for comparing migration methods and tools,
Baxter said. He will also briefly discuss handling TRANSACT.
Attendees of the implementation track will also learn how to transform and
migrate Vplus applications to true Web applications and hear how to implement
HP Eloquence.
Acucorp's Chuck Edgin said his discussion will focus on new opportunities in
graphical programming development. "While still maintaining the core business
assets that were developed along with the original HP e3000 application,
programmers can now incorporate other technologies that will help modernize
their applications once they have been moved to the target platform," he
said.
HP Talks to Homesteaders
Several HP e3000 representatives will be present. "We want to be as
supportive as possible of HP e3000 customers as they plan what they are going
to do next," said Kevin Cooper, of the HP MPE/iX lab.
"I chose to present because I want those customers who have decided that they
are going to stay with MPE-IMAGE to know that CSY will try to help them out
until our end-of-support date," HP's Jeff Vance added. "I want these
'homesteaders' to know that there are HP people who have their interests in
mind as some of the key dates draw nearer."
The homesteading program includes sessions on MPE/iX performance
improvements, network security and performance, application support
strategies and MPE emulation. A very forward-looking session called
"Hunkering Down for 2007" will outline the steps companies need to take to
keep there systems running smoothly after HP ends e3000 support Dec. 31,
2006.
