I've been following the dialog surrounding the GSY teleconference
of last week. I was out of town at SERUG, so I didn't get a chance to
see it myself, but I saw an early copy of the script, so I have a pretty
good idea of what was said (and what wasn't said).

Some readers have expressed concern that the 3000 was not mentioned
during the program. The fact of the matter is that HP sells over 24,000
products, *most* of which weren't mentioned during the teleconference.
GSY's job is to promote HP's HP9000 product line, and they're perfectly
content to leave the rest of the company's products alone.

In other postings, some people expressed amazement (to the tune of no
fewer than three exclamation marks) that one HP executive used the words
"mission critical" and "UNIX" in the same sentence. I think that five
years ago, those two terms probably were mutually exclusive in most
environments. But no more. From everything I've heard, 10.10 represents
a giant leap forward for HP-UX, and in most environments, reliability no
longer represents a significant differentiator between MPE and HP-UX.
There are shops using the 9000 in mission critical environments. We can
debate all day long about whether or not the 3000 would have been a
better fit in those environments, but the fact of the matter is that in
most cases the 9000 was chosen, not because of it's reliability (or lack
thereof), but simply because the desired application happened to run on
the 9000.

I mention this because I'm doing my next TCU broadcast on October 1st.
It's a follow-on to the broadcast of last week - exploring the PA-8000
and HP-UX 10.20 in more detail. I have no intention of mentioning the
3000 on that broadcast, not because of any desire to slight the 3000, but
because it simply doesn't make sense in the context of the topic at hand.
Just thought I'd mention it now, in hopes of avoiding being cast in the
role of a turncoat ("can you believe it - now even *George* is snubbing
MPE!"). I'm still doing broadcasts on behalf of CSY (as well as GSY &
WSY).
