What I have observed (with printers mainly) using
HP's JetDirect configuration (they have NO path),
is that when you do a SHOWDEV (class), they appear
in the ORDER that you ADDED to the class.
In other words if I have a class called "PRINTER",
and I get:
showdev printer
LDEV AVAIL OWNERSHIP BLAH BLAH
1000 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
1001 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
1009 SPOOLED
1011 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
Then I go into IOCONFIG and add printer 1007 to class "PRINTER",
and NPCONFIG, then STARTSPOOL etc., I will later get:
LDEV AVAIL OWNERSHIP BLAH BLAH
1000 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
1001 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
1009 SPOOLED
1011 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
1007 SPOOLED SPOOLER OUT
I haven't observed that Path takes precedence over this
order when there is a Path. But then again I don't
always pay that close attention.
Those that are seeing strange LDEV orders for class
DISC may need to ask themselves in what order were
they added to the class when originally configured?
(And did it come preconfigured?) Was it part of
some INSTALL script?
