Append files to backup tape

Is there a way to append files onto a backup tape??
ie..  Each year I create a new file with and incremented file name (PIBKFB##)
.  I would like to store this to a tape with past years files without having
to restore all, store all and purge.  I currently use ORBIT backup software
running on MPE 5.0.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   TIA
