Well, I'm not a "qualified HP S.E." but I've played with a tape drive or two
in my days.

Can you give us a just a little bit more information;

1- What model system and what OS version are you running?
2- What kind of tape drive? Be specific.
3- What kind of tape is in the drive? Be specific.
4- Describe the SCSI chain on which the tape drive resides
5- What are the symptoms when the drive fails?
6- Does the tape drive work at certain times and not at others? Be
specific.
7- How much data is being backed up at the time of the problem? How much
has been stored.
8- What backup software are you using? What options are in use?

Let's start with those and go from there.

Denys...

Subject: [HP3000-L] ghost tape drive failures

Hi there everyone,
We have a HP3000 that seems to suffer from failing tape drives and even HP
cannot help us. Whenever we need the backup of our production environment
the most that is when the backup job fails on us causing production and the
online users hours of wasted time.
Can someone supply some "helpful" advice on what to do next?
<< only qualified HP S.E. Please respond >>
Thanks,
Mr. Blanchard Lee Carter
