At the MPE/iX prompt type :

        SETVAR HPTYPEAHEAD,TRUE (or FALSE, depending on need)
or
        SETVAR HPTYPEAHEAD TRUE

Hope this helps....I toggle this variable programatically using cobol and the
'command' intrinsic.
