Greetings all, and welcome to the new year. May it be a happy and prosperous
one.

Although I did not take pictures, we enjoyed the Lunar eclipse immensely
here in Cape Town.

To add to our enjoyment, our cricket team romped home to a stunning victory
over Sri Lanka at a ground in Paarl, near Cape Town, to a capacity crowd at
a day/night game, and throughout the game, the camera operators focussed on
the moon during it's slow progress towards and after the eclipse.

Incidentally, Arthur C. Clarke chose Sri Lanka as his "retirement" home, and
in a recent interview, he mentioned that he would reserve the death penalty
for virus authors and deliberate distributors - I wonder if he had just that
morning lost hours of work on his PC?

I recently watched 2001 - A Space Odyssey and thoroughly enjoyed it after
all these years, even though parts of it seem slow to me now.

I guess that's what Internet time has done to us. Only a few decades ago, a
letter from London to Cape Town via Southampton took five weeks at least via
the mail ships. And now, it can take 5 seconds or less.

There is a major eclipse of the sun on 21st June this year (also our winter
solstice), and optimum viewing is south-central Africa - so Victoria Falls
region sounds attractive. There is a steam train ride from Cape Town to Vic
Falls that takes 5-6 days each way. The train stops at game parks along the
way, and in fact the tracks run through game parks. It is luxurious, and
will probably cost about US$5000 for the round trip in royal accommodation
(about 2/3 in luxury), but I doubt there is a finer way for steam freaks to
enjoy Africa and the eclipse.....

Regards

Neil

See this link for some pictures of the recent lunar eclipse. Not very
astronomical, these are more "artistic".
