being on a 969 may (and I haven't checked) already place you in the high-end
tier for pricing with many vendors. that means that going to a larger
system shouldn't cost you anything other than license transfer fees (which
are typically modest).

but you indicated that you've got all your metaphoric apples in one box and
that creates much more concern for me. I think it's very risky mixing
development and production on one system. the bulk of the cost of acquiring
a 2nd system (presumably for test/devlopment) is going to be with software
licensing. (and yes, when you're a cognos shop placing the development
license on a smaller system and the rto license on the larger system is a
smart move.)

someone mention possibly using this 2nd system for failover. it's a thought
but if the new box is smaller than the first (t&d boxes frequently are) --
is it really a solution?

if there really is money to spend --and you're foreseeing being on the 3000
for at least another 3-5 year -- then I'd more strongly advocate for moving
onto the newest hardware you can get -- that means an a-/n-class boxes with
fc disc (and a va array can be shared between systems). the gain in
horsepower will be noticable but the increased reliability should be a major
selling point. - d
