Problem solved,

After pulling at short straws the obvious was the backup I was running even though you do not see a performance hit through Glance. The tape in the tapedrive must have been fried along in the room and I did not replace the tape but used it for the normal backup. There were excessive read / write issues with the tape. The backup completed and the tape was marked as BAD

Many thanks for all who responded. and yes I do have a host name issue that was also not so visible until you read the system logs.
