To the comments below, I'll add that if the printer doesn't support PCL, there are alternatives to replacing the printer.  There are third-party spooling products available that will send output to non-PCL printers.  You might want to look at ESPUL from RAC Consulting.  NBSPOOL from Quest is also very good, but more expensive, I believe.

Does the printer support HP's PCL? If it doesn't, you're basically out of
luck.

While that may not be your specific problem, there's no sense in going any
further in your efforts if the printer doesn't.
