I was struck by a random thought (and it HURT!) while reading this
piece. Does anyone have an estimate on how much it would
probably cost to 'port' MPE/iX to use a Linux Kernel? This isn't a
rhetorical question. Assuming that the project was to write an
MPE/iX work-alike that ran on top of the Linux kernal and
presented the same user interface and API as MPE then what
would a reasonable working budget be and how much effort would
be required? One hundred man-years and an elapsed time of 6
calendar years was mentioned to move MPEiX onto the IA-64 chip
(I believe, no doubt I will be corrected if mistaken). Would going to
Linux be any cheaper? more expensive? take shorter? longer?
The reason that I ask this is that if the HP-Compaq merger doesn't
happen then apparently the party that calls off the nuptials has to
pay the other $625,000,000 USD or so. Does any of this come out
of Carly's severance package?
Regards,
Jim
