They work well for unmodified MANMAN software bar codes.

At some point HP in the early 1990's changed the escape sequence for it's own bar 
chips.

MANMAN still uses the old escape sequence.

This chip will enable an HP LaserJet to use the old escape sequence to invoke a 
bar code.
