While I am not an expert in that area, your description sounds a bit
like a datawarehousing approach could be helpful i.e. have operational
database and reporting database in seperate places (one same or even
different machines) with regular (or ongoing) extractions where data
from the operational database is cleansed/condensed and fed into the
datawarehouse database, which is specially designed and optimized for
reporting, online analytical processing, etc. from PC clients.

You can find related white papers on the www.hp.com/go/3000 web site,
I don't have the exact URL at hand, but it is probably in the solutions
or the datacenter subsections. There is also a small series of articles
on the subject of Datawarehousing with the HP 3000 in the current/recent
issues of the Interex "Enterprise Solutions" magazine (Interact section).

Just an idea. Your milage may vary.

Lars.
