I've had this problem with several USR Sportsters. At minimum, make
sure the modem has been configured with AT&D2; if it has, try AT&D3.
The latter will force the modem to reset when DTR goes low, assuming
that the firmware hasn't gotten wedged. NOTE for the uncautious: while
most modems do the right thing with &D3 and reset on a DTR high-to-low
_transition_, one brain-damaged modem I have (a Cardinal 9600) resets
on a low _level_ when AT&D3 is used. Of course, this means that if
you're setting the modem with a terminal and a three-wire connection,
as soon as you type AT&D3&W, the modem goes into an
infinite loop resetting itself and you'll never get its attention again.
